About the Course
Security incidents rarely occur because organisations lack policies, procedures or security controls. More often, they result from human and organisational factors such as complacency, ineffective supervision, poor communication, weak accountability, unchallenged behaviours and a failure to recognise or report warning signs. Investigations across the energy, maritime, transportation, government and critical infrastructure sectors consistently demonstrate that even the most sophisticated physical and technological security measures can be undermined when security is not actively supported and practised throughout the workforce. Developing a strong security culture therefore requires more than compliance programmes and awareness campaigns; it demands visible leadership commitment, workforce engagement, individual accountability and a shared responsibility for protecting organisational assets, people and operations.
This 5-day Security Culture & Awareness training course explores the leadership, behavioural and organisational factors that influence security performance and resilience. Delegates will evaluate how management decisions, workplace behaviours and human factors contribute to security success or failure, whilst examining insider threats, challenge culture, reporting culture and behavioural vulnerabilities within operational environments. It also considers the increasing convergence of physical security, cyber risk and human behaviour, recognising that many modern security incidents involve a combination of all three. Through the analysis of real-world incidents, practical exercises and group discussions, delegates will learn how to identify cultural weaknesses, assess security culture effectiveness, encourage proactive reporting and develop sustainable improvement initiatives that strengthen security performance and organisational resilience.
Core Objectives
The delegates will achieve the following objectives:
- Examine the organisational, behavioural and leadership factors that contribute to a positive security culture
- Analyse how leadership behaviours and workplace practices influence security performance
- Evaluate the impact of human factors, complacency and behavioural vulnerabilities on security outcomes
- Identify indicators associated with insider threats and other people-related security risks
- Develop practical methods to strengthen challenge culture, intervention practices and proactive security reporting
- Assess organisational security culture using recognised assessment tools, behavioural indicators and performance measures
- Design security culture and engagement initiatives that promote positive workforce behaviours
- Formulate practical improvement plans to strengthen security culture and organisational resilience
Training Approach
This training course adopts a highly interactive and practical approach to learning, combining facilitated discussions, operational case studies, scenario-based exercises, tabletop activities, behavioural analysis and group workshops. Drawing upon lessons identified from real-world security incidents, delegates will explore the organisational, behavioural and leadership factors that influence security performance whilst applying practical techniques to address insider threats, strengthen reporting and challenge cultures, assess security culture effectiveness and develop actionable measures that enhance workforce engagement, organisational resilience and overall security performance.
