About the Course

This 5-day practical Road Safety Impact Assessment training course will deepen delegates’ knowledge and application of proactive road safety assessments. It focuses on understanding the five steps of pro-active road safety assessment, which will help delegates create safer road designs and compare the proposed alternatives. It will present to the future or current members of RSIA teams how to assess the impact of each design option on the existing road network or the planned development in terms of road safety performance.

The delegates will understand how to use scheme objectives, collision and road safety data, and traffic and user surveys to evaluate each alternative. It aims to illustrate and establish road safety impact assessment in its goal of helping to design and build safe road and traffic schemes by using the tools, principles, and best practices of RSIA at the planning stage in choosing which schemes to progress from among a range of possibilities.

This training programme is not there to impose the safety requirements at the cost of capacity and usability of roads but rather to use the RSIA to help roads to be designed with various criteria in mind, such as travel time, user comfort and convenience, fuel consumption, construction costs, environmental impact and objectives of urban or regional planning while achieving the safety level desirable. It discusses the formal safety impact assessment procedures used worldwide and how to implement them within the current legal frameworks.

Core Objectives

The delegates will achieve the following objectives:

  • Understanding of Road Safety Impact Assessment (RSIA) goals
  • Learn how to identify and rank the schemes based on the Road Safety Impact Assessment
  • Perform example Road Safety Impact Assessments on different projects
  • Gain the knowledge of benefits that can be achieved through the proper use of RSIA
  • Learn from the best practices of developed and developing countries
Training Approach

The delegates of this training course will receive thorough training and utilise various proven adult learning teaching and facilitation techniques, with the actual development of a road safety strategy and problem analysis, planning, design, and modelling of road safety-related solutions.

The Attendees

This training course is designed with the road and traffic authorities in mind. People from other departments and institutions can join to fully understand the traffic safety system. The idea is to make traffic safety an integrated and integral part of national development and sustainability.
