About the Course
Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs) are essential engineering documents that support the design, operation, maintenance and safe management of process plant facilities. They provide detailed representations of process equipment, piping systems, valves, instrumentation, control loops and safety-related arrangements, enabling engineering and operational teams to understand system configurations and verify technical requirements. Accurate interpretation and systematic review of P&IDs are critical during engineering design reviews, hazard and operability (HAZOP) studies, commissioning, maintenance isolation and management of change activities. Misinterpretation of drawing symbols, equipment identification, piping specifications or safeguarding arrangements can lead to operational errors, inadequate isolation, compromised process safety and inconsistencies between engineering documents.
This 5-day Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs): Interpretation and Technical Review training course provides delegates with practical knowledge and techniques for interpreting, verifying and reviewing P&IDs in accordance with recognised engineering standards and industry practices. It examines engineering drawing hierarchies, equipment and piping symbols, instrument identification, control loops, interlocks, safety instrumented functions and supporting engineering documentation. Delegates will also explore the application of ANSI/ISA-5.1, ISO 10628, ASME B31.3, IEC 61511 and IEC 61882 in P&ID interpretation and technical review, including their relevance to piping specifications, process safeguards and HAZOP studies. Through practical drawing exercises, cross-document verification and technical review activities, delegates will strengthen their ability to identify drawing discrepancies, assess system configurations, support engineering and process safety reviews, and maintain accurate P&ID documentation throughout the plant life cycle.
Core Objectives
The delegates will achieve the following objectives:
- Differentiate between Block Flow Diagrams (BFDs), Process Flow Diagrams (PFDs), Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs) and utility diagrams based on their purpose and level of detail
- Interpret equipment, piping and valve symbols using ISO 10628-2 and applicable engineering drawing legends
- Decode instrument identification tags, lettering conventions and signal lines in accordance with ANSI/ISA-5.1
- Analyse control loops, interlocks and safety functions using instrument loop diagrams and cause-and-effect charts
- Correlate P&ID line numbers and piping classes with ASME B31.3 requirements, piping specifications and isometric drawings
- Evaluate P&IDs for isolation, pressure relief and venting arrangements, and support HAZOP studies in accordance with IEC 61882
- Prepare and review P&ID mark-ups in accordance with document control, management of change (MOC) and as-built documentation procedures
Training Approach
This training course combines 65% practical applications and 35% technical instruction through expert-led presentations, guided exercises and hands-on activities using industry-standard P&ID sets, engineering legends, line lists, instrument loop diagrams, cause-and-effect charts and piping isometric drawings. Through practical exercises involving drawing cross-referencing, equipment and instrument identification, control loop tracing, technical verification, P&ID mark-ups and facilitated HAZOP analysis, delegates will identify drawing discrepancies, review proposed modifications and strengthen their technical review capabilities, supported by daily feedback discussions, reference materials and practical checklists for workplace application.
