About the Course

Petroleum provides the most significant fraction of the primary energy supply in the world. Transportation of people and goods in many parts of the world depends almost entirely on petroleum fuels, such as gasoline, jet fuel, diesel fuel, and marine fuel. Apart from the fuels, materials necessary for operating the combustion engines of cars, trucks, planes, and trains also come from petroleum. These materials include lubricating oils (motor oils), greases, tires on the wheels of the vehicles, and asphalt to pave the roads for smooth vehicle rides. All petroleum fuels and materials are produced by processing crude oil in petroleum refineries. Petroleum refineries also supply feedstock to the petrochemicals and chemical industry for producing all consumer goods from rubber and plastics (polymers) to cosmetics and medicine.

This 5-day interactive Petroleum Refining training course addresses how physical processes and chemical reactions in separate refinery units are integrated to process compliant fuels and materials. The operations of crude oil into its significant constituents using three petroleum separation processes: atmospheric distillation, vacuum distillation, and light end recovery (gas processing); discussing the advanced refining like Hydrocracking of Petroleum large molecules to convert small value-added small petroleum chains like gasoline and other liquid refining products. It will emphasise the importance of process monitoring, control, and troubleshooting of refinery operations safely and efficiently. Likewise, the essential instrumentation, control system, and safeguard system is implemented in the refinery process to monitor and control a safe and efficient operation.

Core Objectives

The delegates will achieve the following objectives:

  • Indicate what crude oils consist of and how crude oils are characterized based on their physical properties
  • Express the objectives of petroleum refining and classify the processes used in petroleum refining
  • Identify how a petroleum refinery works and sketch a flow diagram that integrates all refining processes and the resulting refinery products
  • Understand the fundamentals of petroleum refining, types of energy resources, fundamentals of crude oil treatment and natural gas processing, fundamentals and purposes of re-refining processes, and properties of main oil products
  • Examine how each refinery process works and how physical and chemical principles are applied to achieve the objectives of each refinery process
  • Deliver the necessary information on support services like heat energy and other utilities are used in the petroleum refining process
  • Know the process control system using in refineries for safe and efficient operation of the refining process
Training Approach

This training course is driven by a blended learning approach and draws on various adult learning techniques such as action learning, experiential exercises, group discussions, video case studies, role play, and self-reflection activities. The resulting variety helps delegates stay engaged throughout the course, feel challenged and draw quick wins for their development. It also ensures delegates are exposed to ample opportunities to apply what they learn to the real-world challenges they face in the workplace.
